Photographs I've gleaned from flea markets, junk shops and sometimes ebay. The cheaper the better. Anything with a story that can be extracted from hand written notes, location research, local histories, census records......anything. A small band of fellow enthusiasts worldwide have helped me with many of these. Of course there are always mysteries that defy research, but there's even a story inside these. All images can be viewed at super-size on Flickr.

No. 10 Camels

"No. 10 camels" Imperial camel corps?

A bit of a mystery which I found crumpled up in a flea market bin. An incomplete pencilled note on the back reads "no. 10 camels carrying to Jamboal.....". It has been suggested that this last word might be a variant spelling of 'Yambo al Bahr' or 'Yanbu al Bahr', which is on the Red Sea in present-day Saudi Arabia, and that this is part of the 10th company of the Imperial Camel Corps during the first world war campaign against the Ottoman Empire.

I count 12 camels.
