Photographs I've gleaned from flea markets, junk shops and sometimes ebay. The cheaper the better. Anything with a story that can be extracted from hand written notes, location research, local histories, census records......anything. A small band of fellow enthusiasts worldwide have helped me with many of these. Of course there are always mysteries that defy research, but there's even a story inside these. All images can be viewed at super-size on Flickr.

Women and cars

Women with a car. Wolseley 18/85.

The Sepia Saturday theme tomorrow is women and cars. Here are two I've found in flea markets. The car in the top picture is a Wolseley with Surrey registration. They've stopped for drinks.

Woman in car. 1920s.

  1. No another car in sight. If the Surrey car is in Surrey it would be a different story now.
Just look at that running board in the bottom picture.

  2. It makes you wonder who took the photo too. Was it the driver, possibly a man, or were they independent young women? There’s definitely a story behind that one.

  3. Those women look so elegant. I wish I had been along for the ride. In the second photo, that must be some sort of fire extinguisher on the running board?

  4. Ah, roads aren't what they used to be. Completely agree with Bob re: Surrey roads. Not only would the road be bumper-to-bumper with cars, but I expect the road is now flanked by hideous, featureless business parks ... but maybe I'm wrong (would love to be) and maybe this stretch of tranquility still exists today.

  6. I don't know about fire extinguisher on the running board - looks like a spare can of petrol to me! Fire hazzard, or what? lol

  7. As a Surrey native and a cyclist who has been run down twice by cars, I can only agree with you, dakotaboo and Bob.

  9. I kept wondering why they stopped to drink!

  10. Great photos! The can on the side of the car could be for petrol or maybe for alcohol (not the drinking variety! The third word on the can is "spirits." Didn't some of those early cars run on ethanol? Anyway, thanks for sharing your photos!

  11. The words on the can probably read "SHELL MOTOR SPIRIT", as on this one: http://flic.kr/p/6XbMvH

  12. That first photograph is almost like a still from a film that is yet to be made. There is so often a story somewhere here. Perfect match for the theme.

  14. That first image looks like an Agatha Christie mystery.

  15. I think this one looks far more like an Agatha Christie mystery: http://benicek.blogspot.com/2011/05/lady-fitch-at-possingworth-park-east.html
