A nice pair of photos featuring the same family in Ulverston, Cumbria. I think the bottom photograph was taken outdoors in a yard decorated with blinds to make it look like an interior.
Photographs I've gleaned from flea markets, junk shops and sometimes ebay. The cheaper the better. Anything with a story that can be extracted from hand written notes, location research, local histories, census records......anything. A small band of fellow enthusiasts worldwide have helped me with many of these. Of course there are always mysteries that defy research, but there's even a story inside these. All images can be viewed at super-size on Flickr.

The little girl on the right does not seem to enjoy having her picture taken......
ReplyDeleteThis is why I love photoshop!
ReplyDeleteIf the girl in the front photo has a musical instrument just what is it she's holding?
ReplyDelete@Bob Scotney
ReplyDeleteLooking at the original size scan on Flickr she appears to be holding a rolled up magazine.
I think you're right about the outdoor space made to look like an indoor space. How very interesting. There's lots of fun detail here, from the facial expressions to the clothing, instruments, and decor.
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos with such nice clarity to reveal the personalities too. Was the outdoor/indoor shot a novel invention or because of lack of flash powder?
ReplyDeleteWhat interesting photos you have here this week, from the elaborate musical instruments cabinet card to the rather amateurish indoor/outdoor setting which I think may have been taken by an itinerant, or perhaps someone new to this profession.
ReplyDeleteMaybe she has some rolled up music. I like the indoor/outdoor setting.
ReplyDeleteThe little girl's eyes in the last photo are so intense. Now that would be different, making the outdoors look indoors. Today we do the opposite.
ReplyDeleteThe father looks rather solemn. Maybe that's what having three daughters does to you.
ReplyDeleteThey Were Obviously Monied & with high social status. It's tempting to imagine they are having their photos taken for posterity. But, I guess ,for them it was an immediate claim of status.Just as today we would go on exotic holidays to flaunt our wealth..in more modest times, the "magic" of photography was a way of impressing their peers?
ReplyDeleteThe look on the little girl's face is priceless! Perhaps that's why her father looks so serious.....
ReplyDeleteLittle Blondie is not happy - perhaps she felt overshadowed by other family member's musical proficiency? I like their Victorian conservatory though :-) Jo
ReplyDeleteSo much wonderful detail in both images. I can imagine how exciting it was when you examined it enlarged. Sometimes you can just get lost in these.
