I initially assumed these were taken in the USA but soon realised this must be an international event, one of the early world scout jamborees. A photo on this website matched the American gateway seen here and so enabled me to pin these photos down to the 5th World Jamboree. There is a ten minute silent film of the whole event on Youtube here, in which you can see the gateway. Each of the logs used in its construction was signed with the name of one of the scouts who built it. The group of scouts on the left are the official 'greeters'.
Photographs I've gleaned from flea markets, junk shops and sometimes ebay. The cheaper the better. Anything with a story that can be extracted from hand written notes, location research, local histories, census records......anything. A small band of fellow enthusiasts worldwide have helped me with many of these. Of course there are always mysteries that defy research, but there's even a story inside these. All images can be viewed at super-size on Flickr.
