A total mystery when I first unearthed it, this photo is filled with detail (see enlarged sections below); A man struggling with a hand cart, a girl playing on top of a wall, children peering in a window. An eagle eyed Flickr user in Australia was able to decipher the road sign on the wall 'Western Esplanade', thus enabling identification. This is the 'Arundel Tower', part of Southampton's medieval town walls. Nestled inside is a pub which Kelly's directory tells us was also called 'the Arundel tower'. Wartime bombing has erased much of this scene though the tower, minus the pub, still stands on the edge of a new shopping mall.
