Photographs I've gleaned from flea markets, junk shops and sometimes ebay. The cheaper the better. Anything with a story that can be extracted from hand written notes, location research, local histories, census records......anything. A small band of fellow enthusiasts worldwide have helped me with many of these. Of course there are always mysteries that defy research, but there's even a story inside these. All images can be viewed at super-size on Flickr.

Dornier DO X Flying Boat 1932

Dornier DO X flying boat. Lake Müggelsee, near Berlin, Germany. 1932.

The Dornier DO X flying boat, on display at Lake Müggelsee, on the outskirts of Berlin, in 1932. Flying boats always seem such unlikely craft to me, and commercially proved to be so. This prototype performed a grand world publicity tour and attracted much attention but no enthusiastic buyers. In the mid-30s it was consigned to an aviation museum, where it was later destroyed by British bombs during the war.
